5 Tips for a Smooth Onboarding Process

Hey, nice to have you here! Now let's dive into the topic of onboarding. The first step in a new job can be quite nerve-wracking. This makes it all the more important that the onboarding process runs like a snail. Here are five proven tips that I would like to recommend to you so that your new employees can get off to a good start right from the start.

1. Start before the start of the employment relationship

Your onboarding process shouldn't start on your first day of work. No, you should contact your newcomers one or two weeks in advance. A few friendly e-mails are enough to welcome them and provide them with the first important information. Let them know what to expect on the first day: working hours, the agenda for the first day, information about other newcomers and important contacts such as the secretariat or the HR department. Believe me, this creates trust and shows that you are an attractive and interested employer.

2. Share knowledge meaningfully

More than just specialist knowledge is required. Your new colleagues should also understand the company culture and how to properly use the tools for project management and communication. Imagine you're in a new country, you have to learn the language and the customs. It is exactly the same in the company. Use a digital tool like Confluence from Atlassian. All important information can be collected, coordinated and made available here. This way, your new employees are always up to date.

3. Avoid over- and under-challenge

No one wants to be overwhelmed with information in the first week that only becomes important later. But neither does anyone want to have the feeling of being useless. Find the happy medium! Challenge your new professionals without over- or under-challenging them. This promotes their interest and binds them to your company. Ask for feedback from those who have already gone through the onboarding process and continuously adjust the process. This way you can ensure that new talents feel valued from day one.

4. Involve relevant parties in a targeted manner

Your experienced colleagues are true gold mines. You have mastered the onboarding process yourself and can pass on valuable knowledge. This helpfulness and competence creates trust and promotes the growing together of the team. A strong team that supports each other and meets each other on an equal footing is essential for the success of a company.

5. Provide orientation and good facilities on site

A tour of the company on the first day will give your new colleagues a good overview of their workplace and the people they will be working with in the future. A fully furnished and ergonomic workplace is the be-all and end-all. High-quality office equipment and good acoustics in the office show your appreciation. Small gestures such as good coffee and healthy snacks will also help your new employees feel comfortable from day one.

Result

A successful onboarding process begins before the first day of work and includes not only the managers, but also the existing workforce. Use digital tools for knowledge and project management and ensure a well-equipped work environment. In this way, you create trust and appreciation, the basis for a long-term and successful cooperation. Make your new team members not just busy, but real comrades-in-arms!
